Solving Algebra Problems

This section of Algebra Homework Help discusses solving algebra problems. Solving algebra problems is a math problem solving area that is key to many fields of math and sciences. In solving algebra problems, we should first simplify those algebra problems or algebra equations.

When an algebra equation contains several operations such as:

  • addition,
  • subtraction,
  • multiplication, and
  • division

it is important to know what algebraic operation to perform first. Click here to learn about order of operations.

Let's try solving simple algebra problems. For example, let's solve a linear algebra problem below:

x - 2 = 30

The first step to solving this algebra problem is to simplify the algebraic equation and rearrange the equation. If in doubt, try separating the unknown from the known. In this algebraic example, the unknown is x and the knowns are 2 and 30.

Rearrange the algebra equation so that the unknown is on one side of the algebraic equation, say left hand side, and the known numbers are on the opposite side of the algebraic equation, the right hand side. This gives:

x = 30 + 2 = 32

 Order of operation for negative and positive number

 When moving the number 2 from one side of the equation to the other side, you need to reverse the sign. We will discuss this in more detail in other sections of this Algebra Homework Help website.
